What is FRAT?

FRAT is a diagnostic blood test that screens for autoantibodies to the Folate Receptor Alpha (FRα), known as Folate Receptor Autoantibodies. The presence of these autoantibodies suggests that folate (vitamin B9) , an essential vitamin for proper growth and neurological function is not being properly transported to the brain and into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). FRA can interfere with folate transport into the brain, potentially leading to neurological symptoms and developmental delays. This deficiency can contribute to Cerebral Folate Deficiency Syndrome, among other neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Which conditions are linked to positive FRAT?

  1. 1. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  2. 2. Cerebral folate deficiency syndrome
  3. 3. Speech and language delays
  4. 4. Developmental delays
  5. 5. Seizure disorders
  6. 6. MTHFR mutation – related folate metabolism disorders

Who can consider testing ?

FRAT is recommended for children experiencing neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric, or neurodegenerative symptoms, including those who fail to meet expected milestones in areas such as speech, motor skills, or social interaction.

  • 1. Children with autism, speech delays, seizures, and other developmental challenges.
  • 2. Adults with unexplained neurological, mood, or behavioral symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Folate plays a key role in brain development, nerve function, and overall neurological health. If it doesn’t reach the brain properly, it may lead to developmental or behavioral issues.

No, FRAT is not a genetic test. It is an immune based test that detects antibodies affecting folate transport.

No. While commonly used in autism cases, it is also relevant for other neurological and developmental conditions.

No special preparation is usually required. However, follow your doctor’s instructions if any specific guidance is given.

Yes. With services like OneDNA, you typically receive expert guidance and genetic counselling to help interpret results and next steps.
